Phillip Joel Hughes — a 25-year-old left-handed opening batsman — was killed when an freak accident claimed his life in a domestic match in the Sydney Cricket Ground. His cavalier style of play and his courage whilst out there in the heat of battle was well known as Hughes already started to show signs of being a future legend of the game. Sadly, tragically and far too young has created a legacy that cannot and should not be forgotten around the cricketing world.

A Promise Unfulfilled

Hughes took off dramatically at first. Hughes then burst on to the scene in Australia with his first cap coming in 2009 and local fans and selectors took to him straight away. It became a hallmark of his game — his aggressive stroke play — especially through the offside. His maiden Test was his Test cap No. 2, when a 20-year-old Moore was summoned to the Australian team for the second Test against South Africa, and his first-century was a clear declaration of the promise that he had.

Although Hughes had early success, his career was very much hit and miss. You could also pick holes in his game and wonder how consistent he was, but you always saw that he had spirit. By 2014, Hughes was on his way to indelibly cementing himself in the Australian team with the controversies surrounding his technique seemingly settled, and his place at the head of Australia’s second-best crop of young prospects by a distance assured.

He shocked the cricketing world by passing away in an untimely tragic death on 27th November 2014. Hughes died of a brain haemorrhage after being struck in the neck by a bouncer while batting in a domestic match. Hughes was struck while batting in the 63rd over of a Sheffield Shield match and died two days later in hospital despite efforts to save him.

Around the world, everyone was shocked about it, and the tributes kept coming from everywhere. The Australian captain, Michael Clarke, and Hughes’s teammates were visibly torn, and the sport Hughes adored recently lost a little of its heart.

A Lasting Impact

The fate of Hughes stirred changes around the cricketing world off the field — especially in the matter of player safety. The unfortunate incident prompted the International Cricket Council (ICC) and various cricket boards to revamp their safety standards, especially in helmets and protective equipment. His legacy ensured future generations of cricketers would be betterprotected, even if it was death that spurred improvements in the protective neck guard and helmet design evolution.

Hughes emergence from the diamond is a legacy of a different nature. His zest for life, his passion for the game and everything basketball and his tireless work ethic are traits that he shared with his teammates, fellow players and opponents and they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. As teammates Clarke, Shane Watson etc. have talked about Hughes determination, his infectious smile and how he brightened up the dressing-room.

The Hughes Foundation

In Hughes’ memory, the Phillip Hughes Foundation was established to promote player safety and health and mental health for young cricketers. To assist players needing help with injury or mental health issues and to raise awareness for the need for sports safety — this is the foundation’s mission.

He carries victim, though he wears it for a reason, of course, but Hughes is so much more — a cricketer, yes, but an individual whose firey spirit gave life to those who he sat next to, the rest now history. Since then, number 64, Hughes’s jersey number, has stood as a symbol of remembrance and tribute. Australian cricketers have honoured Hughes in emotional circumstances, including a sombre tribute last year during the Ashes series in 2015.

An Unfinished Journey

Hughes cricket path ended too soon but his spirit never dies. On this 10th anniversary of his loss, we remember him not just for the enormous promise he represented, but also for the kindness and generosity he extended to those around him. His memory endures in the minds of the players who walked out into the arena when the game opened for business just a week after he passed away, because Hughes was more than a cricketer, more than a life lost, he was a lover of life.

With Hughes gone we are reminded that life can be extremely short but we are also reminded of the lasting strength of a single human life. Since his passing, the story that has unfolded about him has been one of resilience, of devotion and joy about what is possible with iron tenacity.

On this day of reflection for the cricketing family, let us instead remember the One Man Only as an all-time great of The Game that lost His Life Too Early But Will Never Be Forgotten.
